1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT original vintage advertisement.
    DESCRIPTION:
    "O rapture unbearable”
This exclamation and the balance of the ad are direct quotes from the 1965 Car & Driver Year Book and April issue of Car & Driver. Complete reprints may be obtained by writing Alfa Romeo, Inc., 213 Johnson Ave., Newark, New Jersey.
“The Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT is one of the best-performing, best-handling, most exciting small sports/grand touring cars we have ever had the pleasure to test.
It is one of those rare automobiles that combines all the necessary components for high speed
motoring, i.e., steering, suspension, engine, gearbox and brakes, into a package that permits even the most ham-fisted driver to look like an expert.
The responsive, easy-revving characteristics of the engine are typically Alfa. It will pull an easy 7500 rpm and is one of those power-plants which will rev right to the limit without imparting any impression of strain, and the driver must pay attention to the big, eye-level tachometer while accelerating.
However, the important point about the car's performance is that 100-110 mph is a perfectly usable speed range, and it will cruise there with a surprising amount of silence and comfort for two passengers. In fact, the Giulia GT slices through the airstream so neatly that normal conversation can be maintained at 100 mph with one window lowered.
One of the most satisfying parts of a truly balanced high performance car like the Alfa is its brakes. Like the car's suspension and gearbox, the four-wheel Dunlop disc brakes permit even the most inept of drivers to do a creditable job behind the wheel. With its Lockheed vacuum servo, the Alfa's braking system erases speed at a rate that borders on the uncanny. At any speed, from 120 mph on down, a gentle application of the brakes seems to place the automobile in a weird state whereby the laws of kinetic energy are nullified. Supernatural? Not quite. Let's attribute it to the 380 square inches of swept braking area which, on a 2350 lb. car, is like putting 80-foot wings on a Piper Cub.
Click. There’s first. Click-click. There's second. Click-click.There’s third. Click-click. Well, there’s fourth. Wait a minute — click-click — fifth? FIFTH! FIVE FORWARD SPEEDS! It's too much — it’s too beautiful — O rapture unbearable! That is some nice transmission (oops, when it has five speeds it's a gearbox — sorry about that).
A gigantic aluminum air duct runs from the filter on the left side of the engine, across the cam covers, and down into a pair of aluminum 40DCOE4 Weber carburetors. That’s right, Webers, straight from Bologna, the kind that have mixed air and gasoline for all your favorite heroes. They’re beautiful, hanging on the side of that great little aluminum engine, covered with wing nuts and cap screws.
What is that thing about cornering on rails? Shiny flanges on big steel wheels hammering clickety-clack on endless rails won't get a boxcar full of flannel bathrobes and oatmeal around a bend half as fast as this Alfa’s near-perfect suspension — suspension that sprang tried-and-true from the Alfa GTZ racing car, a car that managed to shake up the troops wherever it ran."
Respectful suggestion from Alfa Romeo: visit your local Alfa Romeo Dealer and test drive the new Giulia Sprint GT. Also see the Giulia Spider, Giulia Tl, Sprint Speciale, 2600 Sprint or Spider. Ask about Alfa’s Owner-Driver Racing Program including availability of racing options.
