Description
1835 Classic Head Half Cent, Cohen-1. An attractive original Uncirculated example with considerable amounts of remaining red clearly evident. Despite PCGS’s opinion of “damage”. I believe this to actually be struck on a defective planchet, or possibly edge "damage" due to an ejection error. There is an area 180 degrees rotated from the “damaged” area that is similarly shaped although not as noticeable, unfortunately mostly covered up on the coin by one of the three prongs of the insert. This is similar to what is known as the "Blakesly Effect”. This is a contra-coup physical effect caused by striking a coin on an incomplete planchet (aka, a “clipped” planchet), when metal flow is not normal. That this may be the cause of the issue is supported by a look at the Reverse: the area at the rim directly opposite the problem shows definite signs of incomplete metal flow, as well as a possible strike through due to grease or water. “Mox Nix” as they used to say, unless I resubmit it as a potential error, and get someone to agree with me, not worth the effort. Otherwise, the coin itself is virtually mark free, fully lustrous and absent the “problem”, my impression is that this would likely have certified MS-64BN, then being worth something in the 0+ range. Comparing this coin to the the typical low-end certified Unc, which tends to be darker and not particularly attractive, I think this might provide a better value for someone looking for a “pretty” coin at a discounted price. If cracked out, the "issue" would not show much or at all once placed into a coin album page. My asking price is obviously speculative, however it seems reasonable compared to what most MS-61/62 Half Cents of the date command.
